Drag & Drop and Multi-Select

VertiTab provides powerful drag & drop reordering and multi-selection features to help you efficiently manage your tabs and tab groups.

Multi-Selection

Mouse Operations

Box Selection

  • Left Mouse Drag: Drag across multiple tabs to select them
  • Shift + Left Mouse Drag: Add tabs to existing selection (disables drag & drop during selection)
  • Ctrl/⌘ + Left Mouse Drag: Toggle tab selection (disables drag & drop during selection)

Click Selection

  • Left Mouse Click: Select single tab, deselect others
  • Shift + Left Mouse Click: Select range between current and last selected tab
  • Ctrl/⌘ + Left Mouse Click: Toggle individual tab selection

Keyboard Shortcuts

  • Ctrl/⌘ + A: Select all tabs
  • Esc: Exit selection mode and clear selection
  • Shift + W: Close all selected tabs (when multiple tabs are selected)

Selection Toolbar

When multiple tabs are selected, a toolbar appears at the bottom with options to:

  • Select All: Select all visible tabs
  • Inverse Selection: Select unselected tabs and deselect selected ones
  • Exit: Clear selection and exit selection mode

Settings

You can disable box selection in the selection toolbar settings if needed. This will only disable drag-to-select functionality while preserving click-based selection.

Drag & Drop Reordering

Tab Reordering

Single Tab Dragging

  • Drag any tab to reorder it within the same group or move it to a different group
  • Drop on another tab to insert before/after it
  • Drop on a group header to add the tab to that group

Multi-Tab Dragging

  • Select multiple tabs first, then drag any selected tab
  • All selected tabs will move together while maintaining their relative order
  • A badge shows the number of tabs being moved

Group Reordering

Group-to-Group Dragging

  • Drag a group header to reorder groups
  • The entire group (with all its tabs) moves to the new position

Important Chrome Limitations: However, due to Chrome's behavior:

  • Moving a group upwards (before another group) works as expected
  • Moving a group downwards (after another group) requires Chrome to ungroup and regroup the tabs, causing a brief flicker that cannot be avoided
  • Additionally, dragging groups triggers expand/collapse actions, which we attempt to restore, but some flickering may still occur

Cross-Window Operations

  • Tabs and groups can be moved between different browser windows
  • Simply drag to the target window's tab area in VertiTab

Visual Feedback

  • Drag overlay shows the item being moved with a count badge for multiple items
  • Hover effects indicate valid drop targets
  • Smooth animations provide clear visual feedback during operations

Tips

  1. Selection Priority: When you have multiple tabs selected and click-drag one of them, all selected tabs will move together
  2. Keyboard + Mouse Combo: Use Ctrl/⌘ + Click to build custom selections, then drag to move them all at once
  3. Quick Multi-Close: Select multiple unwanted tabs and press Shift + W to close them quickly
  4. Box Selection Zones: For precise box selection, drag from empty areas between tabs
  5. Modifier Keys: Hold modifier keys during selection to add or toggle tabs without losing your current selection

These features work together to provide a comprehensive tab management experience, allowing you to efficiently organize large numbers of tabs with minimal effort.
